Gabriel (Gabe) Ornelas met Aloura when she was 8 years old and the two of them became immediate friends with Aloura referring to him as Grandpa and GabeO. Gabe loved and supported Aloura’s artistic talent from the beginning and was delighted to watch her art develop as she did. Gabe would be so proud of Aloura’s success and incredible accomplishments. Like Gabe, Aloura is a nature lover and steward of the environment.
Gabe was born in Brooklyn, and after serving in the Marine Corps, Gabe joined the Los Angeles Police Department serving honorably for 31 ½ years, attaining the rank of Captain. During his career, Gabe was an innovator and trailblazer, being the first in many areas during his career: member of the first SWAT TEAM in the world; created the first ever Police Bicycle Patrol, now a part of police departments world- wide; created the first LAPD Community Policing Team in Venice, CA; first LAPD officer awarded the honor of attending the prestigious Army War College with military officials from all across the world and invited to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.
After retiring in Port Townsend, Washington, Gabe devoted his time being an Environmental Community Organizer and Activist, volunteering with many local non-profit organizations, and forming several environmental community organizations.
Gabe’s loyalty, honesty, trustworthy and loving nature will be with us always. Gabe was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was authentic, genuine and a kind and gentle soul, always striving to make life better for others. Gabe left a legacy in his community and within the LAPD.
